San Francisco City Hall is both elegant and accessible, making it perfect for anyone looking for a simple wedding while experiencing a gorgeous setting. This also means that it's very popular year-round. (There are four weddings per hour every weekday, which is 288 per week!) So with all the couples making their way through, how do you make such a popular venue uniquely yours? As a San Francisco City Hall wedding photographer with over a decade of experience, I’ve seen countless ways couples have added their own touches and it's time I shared some of them with you.
Embrace Your Style in Attire
We recommend that you wear clothing appropriate for the grandeur of SF City Hall, but at the same time your outfit should reflect you. You want to be comfortable and have that comfort show through in your photos. You could choose an elegant look with a long veil, a simple yet traditional gown, or a chic jumpsuit (see all three options below!). Whichever you choose, it has to reflect your personality and make you comfortable. Read more about what to wear for your city hall wedding.
There are also accessories, of course. Choose unique jewelry and colorful shoes to add an extra layer of individuality. But keep movement in mind! You’ll likely walk up marble staircases or pose in the rotunda, so choose shoes that allow you to move comfortably. Again, it's all about balancing comfort with the elegance of SF City Hall with what best reflects you.
Carry a Bouquet with Meaning
A bouquet isn’t just an accessory—it’s an opportunity to tell your story. Whether you choose traditional roses, wildflowers, or a single dramatic bloom, your bouquet should be tailored to reflect your taste or cultural traditions. There's such a large variety of bouquets and flowers out there, so work with a local florist to find the best fit for you. See our recommended florists on our Preferred Vendors page.
Incorporate Sentimental Details
Infuse your wedding day with sentimental touches. You could even just choose one important detail to proudly carry with you, such as a photo of a deceased loved one tied to the bouquet. Or stitch initials inside your jacket. Or wear a piece of jewelry that is special to you. The options are endless.
Plan Unique Photo Opportunities - Away from City Hall!
While City Hall offers iconic photo spots, like the Grand Staircase and Fourth Floor Balcony, venture outside for shots in surrounding areas. We take photos at the entrance, of course, but we also head to other parts of the exterior of the building for photos. Most photographers, including ourselves, offer additional time to take photos at other locations around the city. Just make sure to ask about this ahead of time so that your photographer has that time available in their schedule.
Bring More Loved Ones Along
If you're planning a civil ceremony, then you probably already know that only six guests are allowed during the ceremony. But that doesn't mean you can't invite more people to celebrate in other ways. Have them meet you at the entrance with balloons and signs in hand, ready to cheer for the newlyweds when they head outside. Or they could toss rose petals (safer than rice). It makes for fun photos, too!
Write Your Own Vows
While you aren't permitted to say your own vows during a civil ceremony, you certainly can during a private ceremony. But let's discuss options if your ceremony is public. You could write your own vows and say them to one another in another space of the building, and your photographer can certainly take photos of this moment if you like. While vows are traditionally meant to be a public declaration of your commitment to one another, it's certainly not required. And actually many couples prefer to keep them more private, so do whatever feels best for the two of you.
Do a First Look
First looks aren't just for big weekend weddings! Plenty of couples arrive extra early to do a first look and have it photographed. SF City Hall actually has some nice restrooms that give you plenty of space to change, so it's absolutely doable to hide your final look. Or you could do the tradition of not seeing each other all morning until it's time for that first look. If you're trying to figure out the best way to accomplish this, ask your photographer. We'll happily help you navigate the day.

Celebrate with a Reception That’s Uniquely You
Find a nearby restaurant to celebrate after the ceremony. Whether it’s a formal dinner or a casual gathering with friends, choose a reception that fits your style and budget. Many couples prefer a private dining space, and there are a ton of choices in San Francisco for groups of any size. Make sure to check out our recommendations for private dining after your wedding.
If you’re planning your City Hall wedding and need expert photography to capture every special moment, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s make your day unforgettable!
