Saturday Weddings at San Francisco City Hall

Most people experience San Francisco City Hall on a weekday when the place is bustling with elopements, photo sessions, tourists, and government activity. But on Saturdays? The entire building transforms. It becomes quiet, private, and unbelievably romantic.

Saturday ceremonies at City Hall are a completely different experience, and if you’ve ever dreamed of having this iconic building all to yourself, this is the closest you’ll get.

As a photographer who has spent more than a decade capturing weddings inside this building, I can tell you: Saturday ceremonies are magic.

Here's a complete guide, plus images from Cynthia & Edward's wedding day that I photographed in August which allow you to see the true grandeur of City Hall for yourself.

How Saturday Weddings Work at San Francisco City Hall

Saturday weddings at SF City Hall are ceremony-only. There simply isn't time for a reception in the two hour window that you book.

City Hall offers just two Saturday time slots each week:

  • 9:00–11:00 AM
  • 12:00–2:00 PM

These are known as the Two-Hour Wedding packages. Everything is timed and structured so the event flows smoothly from the moment you arrive to the moment you walk out as newlyweds.

When the Ceremony Actually Starts

Your booked time includes setup and breakdown, so I always recommend that couples plan to start the ceremony about 30 minutes after your official start time. So if you have the 9:00-11:00 window, start the ceremony at 9:30am.

This gives your guests time to settle in, find their seats, and take in the incredible architecture of the Rotunda.

If you have a ceremony that's relatively short (say, 15 to 20 minutes), you'll have plenty of time for guests to mill around and admire the architecture, while you take photos around the building.

One Full Hour for Photos

By planning your ceremony a half hour into your reservation, that should give you a full hour for photos inside the building. And trust me, this is where Saturday weddings truly shine.

On weekdays, we often have to navigate around crowds, ceremonies, and other photographers. But on Saturdays? The building is yours.

We can shoot freely on the Grand Staircase, the Rotunda, the 3rd and 4th Floors, and all the quiet corners where the natural light is perfection. If you've ever wanted those sweeping architectural shots without anyone else in the background, this is the time to do it.

Outside Vendors

Saturday weddings at San Francisco City Hall are ceremony-only. There simply isn't time in the two hour window for a full reception. Think of it as a beautifully extended version of the standard one-hour ceremonies held during the week on the Mayor’s Balcony or 4th Floor, just elevated, private, and grander.

However, outside vendors are allowed if there are specific items you want to add to your ceremony. SF City Hall Events has a list of permitted vendors, including audio/visual, beverage/alcohol, catering, decor/design, event support, florist, lighting, musicians, and rentals. It is rare that I see many outside vendors brought in during a Saturday wedding at SF City Hall, but I've definitely seen catering and beverage vendors come in for light appetizers and drinks for guests to enjoy.

Of course, your photographer is welcome the entire time! If you haven't chosen a wedding photographer yet, I'd be honored to discuss your wedding plans with you, so please reach out.

What You Get With the Saturday Wedding Package

According to the official City Hall events site, here’s what’s included in the $6,000 Two-Hour Wedding package:

  • Two-hour reservation in the Rotunda
  • Use of the Grand Staircase for your ceremony
  • Seating for up to 200 guests with natural wood folding chairs
  • Basic building services and insurance

Additional fees apply for guest counts above 200 or for extra equipment or staffing. City Hall does not provide an officiant or manage marriage licenses, so couples need to handle that separately in advance.

Read more about how marriage licenses work at SF City Hall. However, one caveat: you cannot get a marriage license on a Saturday, so make sure to get it within 90 days of your ceremony date.

How Far in Advance You Need to Book

Saturday weddings at City Hall must be booked at least three months in advance. There are no last-minute reservations for these time slots.

The city allows you to place one complimentary 90-day hold, which is helpful if you're still coordinating with vendors or family before confirming your date.

Because Saturdays are so limited, and so popular, availability disappears faster than weekday appointments. If you’re considering it, don’t wait.

Why Couples Choose a Saturday Wedding at City Hall

After photographing countless City Hall ceremonies, I’ve noticed a few reasons couples choose Saturdays:

1. You get the entire building to yourself

This is the biggest one. No crowds. No background noise. No waiting for access to the Grand Staircase or balconies.

2. It feels more like a "traditional" ceremony

The two-hour window gives the day a more formal, relaxed pace while still keeping things intimate.

3. Ideal for larger groups

If you're inviting up to 200 guests, the Rotunda setup feels grand without being overwhelming.

4. Stunning photo opportunities

Crowd-free backgrounds. Perfect light. Access to multiple locations. This is a dream scenario for wedding portraits.

If you’re planning a Saturday wedding at San Francisco City Hall, I’d love to document it for you. With over a decade of experience photographing couples in this historic building, I know how to make the most of your two-hour window, from the Grand Staircase to the top floors where the natural light is flawless. Reach out anytime because I’d love to help you create unforgettable City Hall wedding images.
